We have been here in Cameroon for two weeks. God blessed us with an unusually smooth entry
into the country. In the past, we have
both had the experience that about half of the luggage gets lost in transport,
however all eight of our checked bags arrived in good condition. We are attempting to find our “niche” in the
hospital. Thus far we have done some
psychiatric consultations for the inpatient and outpatient departments, and
plan to start working alongside the chaplains, who are the main mental health providers
at the hospital.
We certainly are missing our families and the comforts of
home, but are grateful for this experience to see how truly blessed we are to
live in a safe country, with good jobs and easy access to, essentially,
whatever we want (oh Amazon). It has
been nice to re-connect with friends and co-workers from five years ago; It’s
flattering to be remembered. We are also
getting to know our fellow missionaries, and the local doctors, nurses,
chaplains, etc.
Despite the impoverished conditions under which most of the
people here live, they seem to approach each day with vibrancy and
kindness. I hope to learn from them
insofar as being content with whatever God has provided—even when you arrive
the week after avocados go out of season.
