Photo Journal

Chad:
Consulting on the mats

Another man in chains. Smiling and calm the entire visit, wouldn't be in restraints in U.S.

Desert pose, with Rebecca our lovely and talented interpreter

Dr. Ann and us, hike in the desert (but let's face it, it's ALL desert)

Evening debrief

Donkey, making garbage into a meal. This was in clinic's backyard

Selfie with two interpreters, they're wearing a "lafaye" traditional Chadian garb
Market

Public transport: "Rakcha" driving by part of market

Another view from our "Rakcha"

Mary attempts to wear a lafaye.

This is how we get our water. Called a "pouse," these boys
push heavy carts of water to refill each house's water supply.
Ours is kept in a small water tower, but most families have a few pots
in their yard. Hard work!

Bryan turns a hammer into a "Reflex Hammer"

Peppers at market.

Song at church in Chadian Arabaic
"ya l-Masih" means "Messiah."
I can't take enough pictures of the beautiful markets
Gonorrhea tea, anyone?

Begger in the street, who looks particularly dissheveled and dirty.
We wondered if he has shizophrenia.

Henna party! (Yes, that's my big foot)

Henna is expensive, so almost everyone in Chad uses black hair dye instead.
(Don't worry, it's not permanent).

My henna feet and view of classic Chadian yard.
On the right are water pots where people store their daily supply.
The mat I'm sitting on is where one would entertain guests
or simply relax. Chairs and tables are rare.

I asked for a "thin bracelet" of henna, but they don't do "thin."
Still, I love it! Unfortunately, two weeks later it's already pretty faded.
Dr. Ann and Rebecca in their lafayes before first day of mhGAP seminar

Chadian kids enjoy selfie function on my phone.

Rebecca was my henna buddy. Unmarried women do their hands, but not feet.

Dr. Ann, Bryan, and Mary, dressed up for first day of seminar

Role-plays!

Kenya:

Bryan and Dr. Roger Brown discuss cases at RVA.
Mostly I took this photo for the lizard.
What do four psychiatrists do during trip to RVA field clinic in Kenya?
Play with Dr. Roth's playmobile Luther, of course!
To repay Dr. Roth for her kindness in letting us stay with her for two weeks,
I snapped this pic of her bathroom reading material.
"Dissociative Disorders..."
Play therapy room at Tumaini Counseling Centre
Peaceful bench in Tumaini's beautiful garden
"City Hoppa," public transport in Nairobi
Baby elephants!

Suspension bridge selfie

Rift Valley Academy (RVA), missionary boarding school near Nairobi.

Cameroon:

Our bus back to Mbingo! (the larger bus had a problem, so we were downgraded to this).
A common roadside market in Cameroon: baked fish!

Bryan smiling inside our tiny bus, happy for the big window
"Dance Sport" aerobics at Banso
Dance sport! Everyone wears matching workout attire since that's mostly what's available and affordable in the market.
Fresh produce in Cameroon!
Bryan teaches residents at Mbingo about Dementia, with an intro slide about "Cognition."

Isn't he cute when he sleeps on the bus?

Roads be wa-wa! (Pidging for "the roads are bad!")

Side of the road is often smoother ride than the potholes

Possibly the most scenic salon in the world?
Thanksful for Ashley and company for keeping my split ends in check!

Bryan found some playmates!
Bow-making, pvc pipe style.
